FAQ

Can a Chaotic character be a Monk?
No. The class table restricts Monks to lawful alignments only (Original 2001 manual). Pairing a Monk with a Barbarian requires careful ordering—community posts describe Chaotic Barbarians blocking later Monk levels.
Does armor ruin a Monk build?
Yes. Wearing armor shuts off Wisdom AC, level-based AC bonuses, enhanced unarmed damage, and fast movement (Original 2001 manual).
How often can I use Stunning Attack?
The manual ties daily uses to monk level. Open Combat Options (C) to activate it; a failed Fortitude save can leave foes unable to act (Original 2001).
Is Monk a good first character in 2026?
GameTruth still recommends Fighter, Cleric, Rogue, and Sorcerer for brand-new parties. Monks shine in advanced or multiclass plans—see forum monk dips for Sorcerer Evasion (Original community, not an official 2026 mandate).

What role does a Monk fill?

Monks are mobile striker-defenders who stack Armor Class from Wisdom and class levels while staying in light or no armor (Original 2001). They use simple weapons only—community guides note Monks cannot rely on Martial weapons the way a Fighter or Paladin does (Original community, RPG Classics).

In a six-hero roster you either replace the Fighter (rarer in 2026 starter guides) or multiclass after the core quartet is stable. Computer Show’s legacy party templates list monk/ranger and monk/rogue pairings (Original 2001 web guide).

Active tools:

  • Stunning Attack — daily uses equal to monk level; prime action for locking down casters (Original 2001).
  • Evasion — on a successful Reflex save, area damage becomes 0 (Original 2001).
  • Higher levels add Ki Strike, Quivering Palm, and self-healing via Wholeness of Body (manual OCR)—all gated by staying unarmored.

Race and attribute buys (editorial)

Monks want high Wisdom (AC and Stunning Attack DC context), Dexterity (initiative and Reflex saves), and enough Constitution to survive until Stunning Attacks land.

Example — Human Monk (single-class start):

Ability Score Cost
Wisdom 15 8
Dexterity 15 8
Constitution 12 4
Strength 10 2
Intelligence 8 0
Charisma 8 0
Total 22

Spend the last 3 points on Constitution 13 (+1 cost) and Strength 12 (+2) → 25 total for Wis 15, Dex 15, Con 13, Str 12.

Elf Monk (+2 Dex / −2 Con after buy):

Ability Pre-racial Cost Post-racial
Dexterity 15 8 17
Wisdom 16 10 16
Constitution 11 3 9
Strength 12 4 12
Intelligence 8 0 8
Charisma 8 0 8
Total 25

Do not wear metal armor on a monk you plan to level—armor drops Wisdom AC, level AC, enhanced unarmed dice, and fast movement (Manualzz, Original 2001).

Verify your final Dex/Wis after racials—heavy armor from a multiclass dip silences monk AC even if you still have levels (Original 2001).

Abilities and hard limits

Ability Detail Tag
Hit Die d8 Original (2001)
Alignment Lawful only Original (2001)
Armor Proficient but bonuses lost if worn Original (2001)
Stunning Attack Combat Options; uses = monk level Original (2001)
Unarmed scaling Table by level (16th non-halfling 2d6 per OCR) Original (2001)

Do not claim Flurry of Blows without testing—our manual pass did not list it, and the fact library flags it as unverified (see Unverified list in F-classes).

3E tabletop-only monk weapons or prestige classes are 3E tabletop rule; game implementation unverified.

Leveling when feats are auto-assigned

Feat and skill grants on level-up behave like other classes (Unverified in the remaster); see /classes/fighter-build/.

Monk leveling priorities:

  1. Stunning Attack uses per day = monk level; reopen Combat Options (C) when you need to shut down a caster (Manualzz, Original 2001).
  2. Each monk level adds unarmed damage per Table 1-3 and can increase Stunning uses—stay monk if that kit is your identity.
  3. Lawful-only at creation; a Chaotic Barbarian on the same hero can block later monk levels (Original community, 80542122).
  4. Keep class gaps within one level unless favored-class rules forgive wider splits (Original 2001 XP).

Monk 1–3 / Sorcerer dips for Evasion appear in forum posts but delay arcane spell peaks—player preference, not official (Original community).

Multiclass partners

  • Rogue for skills the Monk lacks—Disable Device and Open Lock stay rogue-exclusive (Original 2001). See /classes/multiclass-guide/.
  • Paladin 2 / Sorcerer patterns include Monk only if you stay Lawful Good end-to-end (/classes/paladin-build/).
  • Fighter or Cleric members from the default party still provide armor blocks and healing while your Monk dances on the flank (/guides/best-party/).

Lawful Fighter + lawful Monk is fine; adding a Barbarian later can brick Monk progression if you already committed to Chaos (Original community anecdote).

Cross-read /classes/fighter-build/ for martial swaps and /classes/cleric-build/ if you want healing instead of stunning.

Common mistakes

  1. Dressing the Monk in plate after looting the Fighter’s hand-me-downs.
  2. Starting Chaotic Good on another character, then expecting everyone to dip Monk.
  3. Ignoring Combat Options and burning full-round attacks instead of Stunning key targets.
  4. Expecting martial weapon proficiencies from the Monk class itself.
  5. Planning tabletop flurry math—not verified in our sources.
