FAQ

Do you need a full step-by-step walkthrough to finish Ruins of Myth Drannor?
The FAQ cited about 100 hours for a full clear (Original, 2001). This page gives region order and goals so you can use in-game journals and companion guides without copying decades-old step lists.
Where does the adventure start?
In Forgotten Realms Moonsea, parties leave New Phlan and enter ruined Myth Drannor (Cormanthor). Stillwater Ruins is the surface hub in Original walkthroughs (AIssil Events 01–02).
What are Words and Rhonglyn pillars for?
Original references list eleven spoken Words that open glyphs and doors, and colored Rhonglyn pillars that link dungeon layers (Yellow, Red, Purple, Blue, etc.). Remaster behavior is Unverified.
How many companions can join?
Eight recruitable NPCs exist across the campaign; you still cap at six active heroes (four created plus two companions). Join events are numbered in GameFAQs AIssil—see /guides/companions/.
Is this walkthrough valid for the 2026 remaster?
Region names and quest chains are Original (2001) documentation. Level geometry, encounter tuning, and UI quest tracking in Remaster (2026) are Unverified in the remaster until mappers confirm.

What is this page—and what is it not?

You get a route map and goal checklist for Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor, not a room-by-room transcription of 2002 forum posts. Step lists age poorly and often mix author tactics with facts; we pull region names, connections, and quest titles only from cited Original sources.

Expect 40–100+ hours in a completionist mindset (Sorcerer’s Place FAQ ~100 hours, Original (2001)). Remaster pacing is Unverified in the remaster.

Before you descend, line up party roles via /guides/best-party/ and note optional systems in /guides/combat-settings/ (turn timer off while learning, per Gaming.net 2026-11-06 and AIssil Original advice).

What order do major regions connect in?

The table follows Original (2001) walkthrough geography (AIssil; Computer Show chapter list; GameBanshee site map). Unverified in the remaster whether every portal or loading screen matches.

Phase Region (Original naming) Role in the crawl
1 Stillwater Ruins Surface hub; Greener’s Glade; NPC healers Beriand / Faeril; gateway toward underground (Events 01–02)
2 Main Halls Early layered dungeon; color-coded Rhonglyn routing; orc leaders and cult scouting
3 Deep Halls / Halls of Light / Halls of Stone Vertical stack linked by Rhonglyn pillars; foundry and stone-themed set pieces
4 Speculum Grounds Links toward Windrider Glade paths (GameBanshee navigation)
5 Windrider Glade / Glim-Gardens / City Heights Overland-style ruins between major hubs
6 Nightingale Court Temple districts; Mystra-related sites; Great Stone Head for Idolon trades
7 House of Gems (incl. dwarven tunnels) Spawn Pool storylines; ghost Harldain Ironbar
8 Catacombs (First/Second Cellar, Lower Keep, Prisons) Silver Fire side arcs, margoyle pressure, prison keys
9 Castle Cormanthor / Pool Cavern Finale layers tied to Events 136–137

Mid-campaign, multiple exits loop back toward a Stillwater cave hub (German RPGuides summary + AIssil notes, Original). Treat Stillwater as your orientation anchor when depth gets confusing.

Mechanics that make the maze workable:

  • Rhonglyn pillars switch colors (Yellow, Red, Purple, Blue, etc.) to move between floors (Computer Show; AIssil).
  • Words such as Knocking, Mystra, Oblivion, and Redemption open sealed glyphs (AIssil Reference §Word Locations—11 Words listed).
  • Keys and quest items stack into dozens of unique names (Stronghold Key, Serpent Key, …)—track in journal, not from memory.

Deeper combat literacy: /guides/tips-and-tricks/. Class gear limits affect long routes—see /classes/best-class/.

Which NPC hubs matter between fights?

Original references highlight recurring services—not a full NPC encyclopedia (that lives on /guides/companions/).

NPC / place Service Source
Beriand / Faeril (Stillwater treehouse) Healing, resurrection, story hooks AIssil Event 04+
Nottle (Stillwater) Merchant AIssil
Odelinde (Guardian Naga, Temple of Shaundakul) Rest after clearing orcs GameBanshee Windrider/Glade
Harldain Ironbar Dwarf ghost, House of Gems threads GameBanshee; Event 33 trade
Anorrweyn Evensong Mystra shrine chains AIssil quests

Eight companions join at fixed Events (levels/classes in facts C2). You may only field six heroes—plan recruitable gaps before you trigger irreversible fights.

How do Idolon heads and side systems work?

Original (2001) only for mechanics below (Unverified in the remaster).

Six heroes with colored selection rings explore a dark dungeon room with the bottom HUD and tab labels shown.

Idolon items are small stone heads scattered across events (Reference lists 19 pickup references). Carry one to the Great Stone Head west of Nightingale Court (Event 86), right-click Place Small Stone Head, and exchange for rings such as Fist of St. Cuthbert or Lens of Oghma (AIssil exchange table). Sources do not call any reward a “Fading Ring”—avoid conflating fan names.

Other recurring systems:

  • Foundry in Halls of Stone upgrades low-tier gear for better random results (Event 58).
  • Duplicate equipment with the same bonus does not stack—keep the higher roll (AIssil Hints).
  • Ring of Naga’s Kiss and similar curios need multi-step fetch chains (Curiosities §5).

GOG achievement names (Dragonjaw, Earthborn Wind, Alone in Darkness) hint at notable optional arcs without spelling solutions—use them as a compass, not a map.

Spoiler — Main quest arc (Original sources)

Steam/GOG copy (Remaster 2026): a new Pool of Radiance under New Phlan spreads a curse; Elminster recruits your party to investigate Myth Drannor.

Original (2001) quest spine (GameFAQs AIssil):

  1. The Pool, Awakened begins at Stillwater (Event 01).
  2. Mid-game chains include Myth Raveling and Cost of Dreams involving Sapphire of the Weave and the Word of Redemption (Quest list).
  3. Antagonists: Kya Mordrayn (sorceress) and Pelendralaar (dracolich) leveraging the Mythal (Intro; Events 136–137).
  4. Event 136 (Pool Cavern): confronting Kya—walkthrough notes describe three duplicated bodies and opening Fireball pressure; Miroden Silverblade destroys the Sapphire of the Weave when you invoke Word of Redemption.
  5. Event 137: immediate Pelendralaar fight; magic resistance favors melee-heavy parties in author notes.

Skeletal dragon breathes fire in a crystal cavern while the party fights amid fallen allies.

  1. Narrative end state: no return portal to New Phlan—party remains trapped in Myth Drannor per closing text (single ending, no branching finale list).

Tactics in older guides are player experience, not verified AI logs—enter fights prepared to reload (AIssil Combat hints).
